Before we know if we need more memory or RAM in our computer first we need to know what it does and what symptoms we will see if we need more. The RAM in your computer is basically short term memory that is used to store information that will be needed in the immediate future. Unlike the hard drive which is used to store information for long term storage. The Operating System on your computer AND the programs you use also take up memory.
TIP: To see how much memory your computer is currently using.
Windows: Hit CTL+ALT+Delete on your keyboard then going to Task Manager. At the bottom of Task Manager you should see where it says "Physical Memory Use:" then a percentage. This number will jump around but make note of the range of this number.
Mac OSX: Go to Applications then the Utilities folder and click on "Activity Manage". Click on "Physical Memory" in the middle of the screen. From there at the bottom you will see a "Used:" and a number then under the pie chart you will see a total. Take the used and divide it by the number in the pie chart for a percentage that is being used. Make note of this percentage.
Anything in the range of 50-100% while reading this website is not a good sign.
- Slowness opening programs
- Seemingly random app crashes
- Slow while loading files
- Games or videos are "jittery"
- Computer takes a very long time to boot up
If you use our tip to see the percentage of memory used and are seeing one or more of the symptoms listed above, it might be time for a memory upgrade. Most computers you buy online or in a store allow you to upgrade and add more RAM. Generally speaking most computers can double or even tripple the amount of memory they have. Remember the more RAM the computer has the more information the computer can hold in short term memory to use.
Feel free to contact us if you want to know if your computer can take more RAM. Each computer uses a certain type of memory, so it is very important to get the right memory for your computer. This is something we can look at remotely for free to decide with you if it is a good idea to do. Most of the time we can have the right RAM for your computer in and ready to install within a few days.
Note: A memory upgrade is not guaranteed to speed up your computer. There are many things that can cause it to be slow but the amount of RAM often plays a roll in this. Contact us for more info!
