Viruses can cause your computer to slow down. When your computer is being used to do malicious things in the background it takes up precious computer resources that can cause your computer to be unresponsive. A full thorough virus removal can definitely speed things up. Somethings you can do to keep your computer virus free are keep your programs up-to-date, run your virus scanner daily, clean out temporary files, and make sure not to go to unknown websites. A good technician knows that a full virus removal is not complete until all "clutter" is cleaned up.
There is one program that you can use to pretty much do a full system clean up. Sure there are more advanced things that you could do but this is the easiest and safest thing to use. CCleaner is a small peice of freeware software that you can download here. Once installed you run CCleaner and your screen should look something like the below image. Follow the steps below to do a system clean up to sleep things up!
- On the main screen click "Run Cleaner" - This will remove all of your temporary files, history, old unnecessary logs, and lots of other old temporary clutter on your computer. You may have to enter your login information again to certain websites.
- Click on the "Registry" icon on the right side of the program and click scan. After the scan is done click on "Fix Issues" you will then be asked to backup the registry. I always do this just to be safe. After you save the backup your registry will be "de-cluttered". Reboot the computer after this is completed.
Disclaimer: This step could potentially stop your computer from working, although in the years I have been in business this has never happened to me or a customer. The registry is a big database of information that holds all the settings for your computer (like DNA for our bodies). Manually deleting the wrong thing can cause major issues. The CCleaner registry scanner is the only one I would trust and ever use. Avoid all other registry cleaners!
4. Advanced Tip: Under the tools you will also see an option that says "Startup". That is a list of most of the programs that turn on with your computer. Most of the time these programs aren't necessary to turn on with the computer. Generally a trained technician can get this down to just 4 or 5 programs to significantly increase the speed of your computer. If you are feeling ready for it you can click a program in the list and click "disable" and it will prevent it from turning on with the computer.
