A Halloween Horror Story: When Printer Ink Goes Wrong

Project Description

We've seen some scary things in IT, but this printer might win Halloween! Most IT technicians already consider printers a nightmare. This one just decided to make it official!

We recently visited one of our monthly residential support subscribers to investigate a printer that had stopped working. What we found looked more like a scene from a Halloween horror movie than a printer problem! The printer had experienced a pretty unfortunate ink mishap.

So, What Happened?

While rearranging some things at home, the printer had temporarily been placed upside down on a sofa. Unfortunately, inkjet printers aren't designed to be stored or transported upside down. In this case, the printer's ink system couldn't contain the ink, leaving quite the colorful mess inside. And as you can see from the picture, the results were pretty dramatic!

A Little Lesson From This Printer's Misfortune

If you're rearranging your office, moving furniture, or relocating your computer equipment, here's one important reminder: Always keep inkjet printers upright!

Unlike many other electronics, printers contain liquid ink that can leak if they're tilted too far or turned upside down. Even a relatively new printer can suffer significant damage from an ink spill, and unfortunately, this one was beyond what we could reasonably repair. The good news? It's an easy mistake to avoid once you know!

The Scariest Part?

This printer wasn't even a year old! Sometimes the most expensive IT lessons come from the simplest things. Hopefully, sharing this one will help someone else avoid a similar situation.

Happy Halloween from Layer 2 Computers!

And remember, when moving your printer, keep it upright. The only thing that should be spilling this Halloween is the candy bowl!
